The Mets Have Really Allowed The Nats To Put An Offer On The Table For Yoenis Cespedes
ESPN - The Washington Nationals are making a run at free-agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, according to a report by Fox Sports. The Nationals reportedly had made runs at two other free-agent outfielders who signed elsewhere: Jason Heyward, who went to the Cubs for eight years and $184 million, and Justin Upton, who just joined the Tigers for six years and $132.75 million. Cespedes, who batted a combined .291 with 35 home runs and 105 RBIs last season with the Detroit Tigersand New York Mets, is the last big bat on the free-agent market after Chris Davis returned to the Orioles last week and Upton signed this week in Detroit. The Nationals made a big, late splash in free agency a year ago when they inked right-hander Max Scherzer to a seven-year, $210 million contract. Washington currently has a starting outfield of Jayson Werth, Ben Revere, and Bryce Harper.
How is it fucking possible that the Mets have sat around picking their asses long enough to allow the Nats to put an offer on the table for Cespedes? It’s unreal. The Nats traded for Revere, thinking there was no way the Mets would really be this terrible of an organization to let Cespedes slip away. The Mets have 5 stud pitchers. A good bullpen. And then Cespedes came in and lit the world on fire last year. And the Mets won’t pay him. It’s not even THAT big of a contract, all things considered. Absolutely crazy that the Mets are potentially just going to let him walk away. Insanity.
So while the Mets are making the decision to waste the most talented young pitching staff you will ever see, the Nats are swooping in and trying to ink Cespedes. Doesn’t matter that they already owe Werth 42 million dollars over the next 2 seasons. Or that they just traded for Revere. Or that they have young stud Michael A Taylor waiting in the wings. They still, despite all of that, have a contract on the table for Yoenis Cespedes. A signature away from having him playing along side Bryce. Would be insane. Would instantly turn the Mets back into that team who were historically woeful on offense last season. I don’t know how the Mets are allowing this to happen, but man do I hope he signs.
